SALVADOR DALI

Salvador Dali (1904 - 1989) was an important artist of the surrealist movement, in the first half of the 20th Century
The painter with his strong personality, had a key role in contemporary culture and has become a universal genius, and is a good example of a man that is inseparable from its region, the Empordà and the landscape of Cap de Creus in northern Catalonia. He was born in Figueres and studied at the School of Fine Arts in Madrid. There he met with a range of emerging, intellectual personalities of the time, as the filmmaker Luis Buñuel and the poet Federico Garcia Lorca. He discovered Cubism, Futurism, metaphysical painting, photography and film and explored all the possibilities. After an exhibition in Barcelona in 1925 and in Madrid in 1926, Dali went to Paris where he met Picasso and detected the Surrealist movement.
Dali spent his summers in Cadaques, where his father was born and lots of his friends  from the Madrid and Paris came to this little village.
Especially Paul Eluard, who came with his wife Gala.

When Dali came into conflict with the Surrealist movement, he settled in 1940 in the United States where he was developing his creative talent, achieved a considerable success, and influenced the fashion and advertising world. He also designed clothes and scenery for several ballets. The artist, who was always closely connected with his native bought at the height of his fame a few fishermen's houses in the small bay of Portlligat, near Cadaques, which he converted into his home and studio. From then on he alternated between the Costa Brava but also in cities like Paris and New York.
Finally, at the end of his life, he chose to stay in Catalonia and donated a Castle to Gala. This was his promise to make her a "queen of a castle"
This Púbol Castle, in the municipality of La Pera, close to La Bisbal de L'Emporda, is the house where Gala lived and the story goes that, the painter was not allowed inside the castle without a written permission of Gala herself.
In 1974, Dali's dream became reality and he opened his Theatre-Museum in Figueres, the Dali museum, this museum contains a varied collection of his work that reflects his entire artistic career. In reality, the museum is also a masterpiece of the genius because it was designed by the artist himself. Now It is one of the most visited museums in Spain.
After the death of Gala and later Salavdor Dali, the Foundation Gala Salvador Dali was created that now manages Dalies Triangle: The Theatre Museum in Figueres, Castle Púbol House and Museum in Cadaques. In this museum visitors can explore the artistic and human personality of the artist while enjoying the beautiful surroundings
.

Gala Dali

Born as Elena Dmitrievna Djakonova (Kazan, Russia, September 7 (OS August 26) 1894 - Port Lligat, June 10, 1982), simply called Gala, was the wife of French poet Paul Eluard and later the Spanish painter Salvador Dali.
Gala came from a family of intellectuals. As a young woman she lived in Moscow and graduated as a teacher in 1915. One of her childhood friends was Marina Tsvetaeva.
In 1913 Gala was sent to a sanatorium in Clavadel, Switzerland because she was suffering from tuberculosis. There she met Eluard and fell in love with him. In 1916, during the First World War, she traveled to Paris to join him. A year later they were married and in 1918 their daughter Cecile was born. Gala was not interested in motherhood, neglecting her daughter for the rest of her life.
In August 1929 Gala, Eluard and some friends visited Salvador Dalí in Port Lligat near Cadaqués. It was love at first sight for Gala and Dalí. Gala and Eluard then divorced and Gala married Dali in 1934 (for the law). In 1958 their church wedding was consecrated in Montrejic . Her marriage to Dalí was not very sexual orientation, because Dali was known for his phobia of female genitalia. Dali was very likely a virgin when he met Gala in 1929. Before Dalí and Gala, he had a strong friendship with the homosexual poet Federico García Lorca, who twice unsuccessfully tried to have sexual contact with Dali Their friendship ended after the film Un chien andalou by Luis Buñuel and Dalí came out. García Lorca saw this film as a personal attack on him.
Although Gala was Dalí's muse , she also kept in touch with her ex-husband had multiple affairs with younger lovers.
Many of the paintings of gala by Dali can be found. In 1969 Dalí bought for her castle to Púbol Baix Emporda, where she lives until she dies in 1982 and was buried in a crypt.
